On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people stormed the border. Spanish troops were sent in after government officials could not handle the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities reported that about 40,000 migrants arrived on foot, approximately half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union declared Frontex would assist and asked Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces held the flow under control and worked to halt additional loss of life.
